Drawing influences from his roots but firmly looking towards the future, Esa embodies a sound without limitations, part of a unique breed of talent challenging the electronic music scene
London-based South African Esa Williams is part of a unique breed of talent challenging the electronic music scene. Drawing influences from his roots but firmly looking towards the future, he embodies a sound without limitations. A charismatic and energy filled DJ as well as a gifted producer, his impressive and evolving output spans his early productions on his own Rememory Music label, to collaborations with Auntie Flo and the much-touted Highlife World Series. Take a trip through his back catalogue, and you can find a distinct yet expansive musical identity of vibrant, rhythmic and wholeheartedly positive productions. His music has been represented by acclaimed imprints such as Burek, Omena and Hello Sailor, while his 2017 ‘Aweh’ EP on Dekmantel spread a message of friendship and advocated ‘awareness’ of the collective musical world.
Esa carved out a niche curating electronic music-focused educational programmes in Cuba, East Africa and South Africa where he used his knowledge and skills to inspire a new generation of enthusiastic DJs and producers, and also takes pride in championing music from artists who may have fallen through the cracks. He can be regarded as a creative polymath, being able to connect the dots on many cultural, historical, musical and technical levels. An example of his diverse music heritage and production skills can be seen in the Against The Clock series by FACT.
Now Esa has found new ways to channel these experiences and stories through his music, performances and collaborative projects. Through his residence at Worldwide FM, Esa shares tales that are inspired by his musical journeys. Taking inspiration from all the travels, all the people he met, and all the artists he played with, he is constantly starting new projects and readying work to present his musical vision. Expect a world connected in musical, cultural and historical traditions to be enjoyed by simply listening and visualising the stories that are Esa.
Esa will be playing all night in the dungeon on Friday night. NOT TO BE MISSED!
