The veteran Portuguese DJ has helped kickstart a new DIY local movement in Lisbon centred in the intersection of rave culture, trans-feminism and queer politics
A veteran Portuguese DJ as well as the producer behind one of the past year’s deadliest left-field groovers, ‘Viperidae’, Photonz is the main alias of Marco Rodrigues, co-founder of Rádio Quântica and the infamous Mina parties in Lisbon. Together with Violet and Marum of Rabbit Hole, he’s helped kickstart a new DIY local movement centred in the intersection of rave culture, trans-feminism and queer politics.
Sonically, he combines elements of early trance, US midwestern house and techno with The Hague’s raw electro and various iterations of the UK bass continuum into euphoric productions and sets, as felt recently at Panorama Bar, Atonal, Sonar BCN and the Honey Soundsystem parties in San Francisco. With his new ‘Angel Heart’ EP on Violet’s ubiquitous imprint Naive and a return to Dark Entries later this year for his anticipated debut album titled ‘Nuit’, 2019 seems to be shaping up to be one his most prolific years so far.
